The machete has a long history and the modern machete is often compared to similar, earlier, tools/weapons, such as the "Kopis" from ancient Greece. In fact Cold Steel did produce a machete by that name.
In Germanic parts of Europe the machete's predecessor was the "Seax" and I see Cold Steel have the "Sax" machete, which I assume is from the same root word.
The "Falchion", prevalent in Europe from around the
13th Century, was also of very similar design to the modern machete.
